Polish Poster Art (26 March 2007)

poster.jpgThe two posters that flank my T.V. usually elicit an uncomfortable response. Maybe it’s the lack of color, the bare breasts or even the hoofed human leg. Whatever it is, the art of Franciszek Starowieyski is certainly bizarre. At home, the posters were kept hidden away in a back room, a surprising relic from my father’s art collecting days. I remember sneaking back there to look at the mysterious images. The fanciful script made the polish words even more cryptic and the skulls and breasts compelled me to only look for a second before shutting the door and running back to my room.

Now the posters hang prominently in my living room. I have seen them so many times that I don’t really see them anymore. But whenever a new visitor stops by, I am reminded of how I felt about the posters so many years ago peaking into the back room.

To check out more of Franciszek Starowieyski’s art, or other Polish artists visit the Polish Poster Gallery (FYI: since bare breasts are a recurring theme of Starowieyski’s art, some of the images on the sites linked here may not be safe for viewing at work a.k.a. NWS)

An Arctic Odyssey (20 March 2007)

bellhouse.jpg

On Wednesday April 4th, Chicago’s Newberry Library will be hosting a lecture on the 1949 and 1950 Arctic expeditions of Edmund B. Thornton (a.k.a. my dad!). From the Newberry Library’s website:

“During the summers of 1949 and 1950, Mr. Thornton served as a crew member on the Schooner Bowdoin out of Boothbay Harbor, Maine on two expeditions to the Arctic. He reached a latitude of eleven degrees from the North Pole, and had contacts with the Native Inuit in North Greenland. This visually stunning program will include highlights of Mr. Thornton’s Arctic experience together with comments on the history and exploration of the Arctic Regions.”

If you will be in Chicago, and have any interest in geography, history or anthropology, I recommend that you attend this lecture. Click here to register for this event.

Design at Target (16 March 2007)

Being a student, I don’t have a whole lot of extra money to spend on beautiful danish modern furniture (when I find it for cheap, it usually costs more to restore it!) or other nice things for my apartment. Therefore, it’s good to know that Target is looking out for all us students out there by offering attractive design at even more attractive prices.

colanderI have this same colander in orange, but it’s showing a little wear and tear. I love my colander because I can leave it out with some fruit and it looks great. It’s always so hard for me to pick out just one color when all of the colors are presented in a spectrum. Aqua? Orange? I can’t decide! On sale for $16.19 at Target. Also available in 5-qt. for $21.99

espresso bookshelvesI just bought this bookcase because I was running into a severe storage issue with my books. I like to hold on to my textbooks as reference, because I don’t always remember everything I learned my freshman year. This bookcase also comes in three different sizes and finishes, so there is something for everyone. You can also buy a couple to create the illusion of a singular wall unit. $59.99-$99.99 in Espresso (shown), Dark Oak and Honey Oak (lightest finish)

totem bookcase

I love this bookcase, but I love it even more when it’s stacked with another. At $99.99/case, it’s not exactly student budget
friendly. However, I loved the design so much, I had to put it up here. Also available in a deep brown/black finish.

cookie!

Recently, I’ve had cookies on the brain. Not the warm, fresh from the oven chocolaty chip kind, but the information storing cookies of the HTTP variety. In celebration of all things cookie, magic or otherwise, I’m posting my very own Chocolate Chip (non-HTTP) Cookie recipe. The key to these rich and chewy treats is the large amount of brown sugar, extra egg yolk, and kosher salt. If you don’t use kosher salt I recommend you go out and get a box the next time you have to get groceries. The flaky structure (larger surface area) allows for rapid dissolution into whatever you are cooking/baking. It also sticks very well to meat and potatoes which makes it great for searing and roasting.

The 7 Wonders nominees are separated into geographic regions where you can vote for one Wonder for each region. The voting will take place everyday until Saturday March 31st, with the field of nominees diminishing each week. Biggest Dork Ever (12 March 2007)

At first I thought this was part of the Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! But no, it’s just that bad. Love his greasy hair and the intro scene where he is using canned air and pushing the printer cart across the room.

The owners of Jupiter’s Pizza, the Highdive, Cowboy Monkey, Guido’s and Soma (I’m probably missing one in there) have added yet another downtown Champaign bar to their list. Seven Saints is slated to open at 32 Chester St. around the first week of April. From the News-Gazette:
“Seven Saints will offer a casual atmosphere, a full bar with tap beers and a full kitchen to serve high-end bar food such as gourmet burgers, salads and appetizers…it will hold 150 people inside, and a few tables outside in nice weather will be available to accommodate smokers…”

Dump Eppley (7 March 2007)

Chief Illiniwek II; 1930Here is an interesting site concerning the recent decision by Lawrence C. Eppley, President of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees, to remove Chief Illiniwek as the official symbol for the University of Illinois. Pro-Chiefers are saying that Eppley acted unjustly by not actually having the Board of Trustees vote on the issue.

From the Chicago Sun-Times article by Dave Newbart published on 28 Feb 07:
“School spokesman Tom Hardy said the decision was made by “university leadership.” A statement posted on the board’s Web site — and later quietly removed — said board Chairman Larry Eppley conferred individually with colleagues and they reached a consensus. No public vote by the board of trustees was necessary, the statement claimed. Trustee David Dorris said his understanding was this decision would be made by the university administration, which oversees things like athletics and the marching band. (Presumably, even the assistant band director could have pulled the plug, considering it was his predecessor in 1926 who created the chief in the first place.) “

From DumpEppley.com:
“Eppley Violated By-Law by Reversing 1990 Board Resolution (updated 02/26/07)

After Trustee David Dorris said Eppley could not legally take the action he did, DumpEppley.com did some research and found the minutes from the 1990 meeting (pg 109 and 110) that officially named the Chief as the University’s official symbol. We found that Article IV, Section 3 of the Board of Trustees By-Laws, clearly states, “The Executive Committee functions as an instrument of the board and shall possess all the powers of the board when in session, provided that it shall not overrule, revise, or change the previous acts of the board, or take from regular or special committees any business referred to them by the board.”

The site is worth a look no matter your position on the Chief. The fact that this decision was done in such a seemingly “underhanded manner” does raise a few eye brows. No one seems to be proud of the decision because that would almost certainly affect their alumni donations, which is a vital resource for this (if not all) universities.

Update:
It looks like because of all the confusion over the decision to oust Chief Illiniwek, the Board of Trustees has agreed to a formal vote on the matter at their next board meeting. -via Chicago Sun-Times
The vote was made and the Chief is out. -via Daily Illini

AppleThis week the Illini Apple Center announced that they are officially an Apple Authorized Service Center. This Monday through Friday (March 5th-9th) the IAC will host free “Lunch-&-Learn” sessions where you can learn a little bit more about your Mac and have lunch at the same time. With topics ranging from Mac 101 to Video Blogging, the events seem to be geared toward the casual everyday Mac user. The only session that I am somewhat interested in is the “Leopard Preview” being held this Friday at noon. Are they just going to show the streaming Leopard preview that Jobs presented last year? I can’t imagine they could do much else. I’m assuming they have some sort of generic presentation that is in use at every other Apple Store.

If you’re interested in these events or need a place to take your broken Mac… More »
